You kn0w those shows that you’ve seen so many times that you almost know the words by heart? Since I was given the opportunity to do a review on the the new “Sofia the First: The Floating Palace” DVD, my daughter and I have watched it at least 5 times. Emma LOVES Sofia the First and this new installment is no exception. Each time we watch Sofia the First, I know that my daughter is learning something critical about being a good person. Sofia may be learning how to be a princess, but at the same time, she is consistently challenging the common perception of what a princess should be. She is smart, kind, and compassionate and those qualities are valued much higher over those of her fellow princesses (beauty, wealth, and bossiness). Sofia is a wonderful role model for little girls!
Sofia the First: The Floating Palace is a story of overcoming prejudices and assumptions. Sofia’s family and the mermaid kingdom learn to overcome their assumptions about each other and work together to create a better world. This is a wonderful message to teach our children, especially in a world where so much hatred runs rampant. Children need to know that differences aren’t something to be afraid of, but rather ways in which we are all unique. Our uniqueness is what sets us apart from each other, but simultaneously brings us together.
